A Note from our Founding Veterinarian, David Thurmond, DVM

We invite you to read this letter from our founder, Dr. David Thurmond.

After both living and practicing veterinary medicine in the West Houston, Texas area for 17 years, I found that the West Katy and Fulshear, TX areas were underserved when it came to top-tier veterinary medicine and veterinary services. The more I considered it, the more I realized that the community was ready for a family owned and operated animal hospital that would provide the standard of veterinary care at a reasonable cost.

So, I set out with my wife Kim, combing the vast countryside for a location that would serve pet owners from across the region.

Searching wasn’t easy, but after a few months I found a small space in the midst of a commercial area to finally open The WellPet Center Veterinary Hospital. With the hope of providing outstanding veterinary services to as many pet owners in the region as possible, we opened our doors, but I knew that the small, quaint space would soon be outgrown.

While the original animal hospital location served a great purpose, I sensed that even greater things were possible. During our first 18-months we experienced an almost unimaginable welcoming from the community, alongside dramatic growth. Shortly after, Dr. Cynthia Aswad, a Katy, TX native, joined our pet hospital and we began to consider a larger, more accommodating state-of-the-art veterinary facility to better serve the ongoing needs of Katy and Fulshear, TX residents.

In March of 2014, only two years after The WellPet Center Veterinary Hospital first opened its doors, we welcomed Dr. Bryan Ping, a long-standing and well-respected veterinarian in the Houston, TX area as a proud partner of our animal clinic. The three of us were stepping all over each other trying to serve the needs of our clients and patients in the small space we originally called The WellPet Center.

We set out to design and build our latest and greatest veterinary hospital, now located at 5910 FM 1463 Rd, Katy, TX. After a tremendous amount of work which was a true labor of love, the new pet clinic opened in January 2016, offering 10,000-square feet and containing fully-equipped examination rooms, 40 separate kennels, an independent grooming suite, a surgical suite, in-house pharmacy, a state-of-the-art laboratory for rapid diagnostic work and much more.

Our veterinary clinic, which was originally opened with Dr. Thurmond and Kandis (now hospital manager) is stronger than ever before. While we had an initial vision of serving the pet health care needs of the Katy and Fulshear, TX areas, we never quite expected the level of welcome and support we’ve received from our local communities including Cross Creek Ranch, Houston, Sugar Land, Richmond and Cinco Ranch. With the goal of giving back to our local community, we routinely work to support our local schools and proudly provide Military and First Responder discounts.

Our veterinarians and veterinary staff couldn’t be more thankful for our community, our clients, patients and the support we’ve received along the way. Our veterinarians and staff at The WellPet Center Veterinary Hospital are thrilled to deliver our wide-range of veterinary services and continue to enhance our veterinary practice, especially with the recent additions of Dr. Sadie Bowling and Dr. Michelle Hessell.

Working closely with this community and providing veterinary services to the Katy and Fulshear, TX areas is what we love to do, and we’re honored to be the first destination for local pet owners when they require veterinary expertise and personalized pet health care.
